Where does 1 inch come from?

Specifically, it was designated as "three grains of barley, dry and round, placed end to end lengthwise."

This definition, though practical in its time, was not the only one.

At various points in history, the inch was also defined as the combined lengths of 12 poppyseeds.

In the early 14th century, during the reign of King Edward II, the inch had a unique definition.

However, with the advent of more precise measurement standards, these definitions became obsolete.
