My computer suddenly prompted me for a BitLocker key when I tried to access my files. I'm not sure why it's asking for this or where to find the key. Can someone help me understand why this is happening? Why is my computer asking for a BitLocker key?

BitLocker, a robust security feature in Windows, safeguards your data by encrypting the drive and requiring a recovery key during certain scenarios. One such instance arises when a drive is connected to your PC and recognized within the boot sequence.

Upon detecting a new drive during boot, BitLocker promptly prompts for the recovery key to ensure that unauthorized access to your system is prevented. This is a standard security measure designed to maintain the integrity of your encrypted data.

However, if you find yourself being repeatedly asked for the recovery key without connecting any external devices, it could indicate a different issue. Specifically, the boot support for Preboot for Thunderbolt (TBT) and USB-C/TBT might be enabled by default on your system.

Thunderbolt and USB-C/TBT offer high-speed data transfer and connectivity, but they also pose a potential security risk if not properly managed. The boot support feature, when turned on, allows these ports to initiate the boot process, potentially triggering BitLocker's recovery key prompt even without a physical drive attached.
