I'm curious about the function of an hourglass. I've seen it in many places, often as a decorative item, but I want to know its original purpose. What does an hourglass do and why was it invented?
When paired with a common log, the hourglass is referred to as a log glass. This combination is used to ascertain the speed of a ship by measuring the time it takes to travel a certain distance.

These bulbs are joined together at their apexes, creating a narrow passage between them. SAND flows through this passage, allowing for the measurement of time.
