Why is my Bitcoin transaction received but not confirmed?

I sent some Bitcoins to another wallet, and the transaction shows as received on the recipient's side. However, it's been a while and the transaction still hasn't been confirmed on the blockchain. What could be the reason for this delay? Why is my Bitcoin transaction received but not confirmed?
