The double eagle coin was minted in 1933. A total of 445,500 double eagle coins were produced that year, but most of them were later melted down due to the critical shortage of gold during the Great Depression. Only a few coins, including the famous 1933 double eagle coin, survived and became highly valuable collector's items.
