How do you tell if a coin is P or D?

I'm trying to figure out whether a coin is heads or tails, but I'm not sure how to determine it. Is there a specific way to identify if a coin is showing the head side, which I assume is 'P', or the tail side, which I think is 'D'? How do you tell if a coin is P or D?
