What happens if you send Bitcoin to an address that doesn't exist?

I'm wondering what would occur if I accidentally sent Bitcoin to a nonexistent address. Would the transaction fail or would the funds be lost forever? I'm concerned about the safety of my Bitcoin transaction. What happens if you send Bitcoin to an address that doesn't exist?
