I have some coins that are mutilated, either by accident or intentionally. I'm wondering what typically happens to such coins. Are they still usable? Can they be exchanged for new ones? Are they worth less now? What happens to mutilated coins?

The Mutilated Coin Redemption service of the United States Mint has been permanently shut down.

This means that the United States Mint is no longer accepting bent or partially damaged coins for redemption.
