Abstract:

  • This lower per-share price makes the company’s stock more accessible to regular investors, who will hopefully purchase shares and improve the company’s overall value.
  • Despite the fact that investors frequently have dramatic short-term reactions to stock splits, it is important to remember that investing is ultimately about evaluating a company’s success.
  • In 2022, stock splits occurred for not just Amazon and Google but also Shopify.

You might have heard that Tesla had a stock split recently. (Yeah, I know, another.) On August 24, 2022, the electric vehicle manufacturer had another stock split. After a week, let’s take stock.

Many people who follow the market closely and casual investors alike are curious about the Tesla stock split. The latest Inflation Reduction Act has also increased focus on the EV business as analysts try to decipher how funding will be distributed.

A lot of people are talking about the stock split since Tesla is the sixth largest company in the world and its performance is crucial to the electric vehicle sector in the United States. In this article, we’ll analyze the Tesla stock split, tell you if and how the split affects the stock’s value, and explain what you should do next.

Why Do Stocks Split?

A stock split is often seen as little more than a “cosmetic surgery” for companies. When a stock is split, it’s usually so that individual investors may afford more of the stock.

They might also do this to bring their stock price in line with that of other companies. In other words, if Coca-stock Cola’s is up at $200 or $300 while competing soda stocks are selling for $5 or $10 each, the company’s management may opt to issue double shares in order to reduce the stock price by 50%.

The company’s valuation has not changed; the only thing that has changed is the paper value of a share, which has been cut in half.

Is it A Good Idea To Split Stocks?

While it’s true that a stock split reduces the price of individual shares, the value of your holdings remains the same. Simply put, you may now buy twice as many shares at the same price. The current value of the stock is halved from its previous high.

Investors who aren’t paying close attention may find themselves lost in the shuffle after a stock split. Misinformation in financial analysis can be introduced if a share split is overlooked in a historical chart. When a stock is split, the number of people who are able to trade it increases.

It’s also worth mentioning that in this day and age of fractional investment, when platforms create tokens allowing small traders to buy bits of an individual company or cryptocurrency, stock splits to make shares affordable are even less feasible.

How do Stock Splits Work?

Let’s start with a quick recap of how stock splits work. The outstanding number of shares of stock is increased when the company’s stock is split by the board of directors. So, the value of a single share decreases since it represents a lesser stake in the business. Like slicing your pie into individual servings.

Stock in the company is now within reach of more investors thanks to the drop in price per share; these new buyers will boost the company’s market capitalization and, in theory, send the stock price back up.

The main advantage of a stock split is that it makes investing in the firm more accessible to people who would not have been able to afford it before due to the higher share price. Although more and more investors are comfortable buying fractional shares, many still prefer to buy whole shares or are put off by the stock’s high price.

To attract additional retail investors, a corporation may also decide to split its shares of stock. Investors who buy and sell stocks on a more casual basis are more likely to be attracted to a stock with a lower price.

Tesla Stock Split Date

When exactly will Tesla stocks be split? For months prior, speculation persisted that Tesla would divide its stock. The 3-for-1 stock split was authorized during Tesla’s annual meeting on August 4, 2022. On March 28 of this year, though, a tweet first suggested the stock split. As anticipation grew, a vote by shareholders was required to formalize the stock split.

According to a proxy statement filed by Tesla earlier this year, the company split its shares so that all employees might potentially benefit from equity at a lower price. More workers and investors could get in on the Tesla action if the stock price were reset.

In their press statement, Tesla made the following claims:

“Our stock price has increased by 43.5% between the date of our stock split in August 2020 and today, June 6, 2022. While this increase in value has been very beneficial to our employees throughout the years, we are committed to ensuring that all of our workers, regardless of when they joined the company, get the same benefits.

In addition to making the common stock more accessible to retail stockholders, Tesla stated in the announcement that it wants to provide greater equity management options to its employees.

On August 24, 2022, after the stock market had closed, there was a stock split. As the market closed that day, TSLA stock had reached $891.29. On August 25 at market open, shares were selling for around $302. On August 26th, the price of the stock was $288.09. The price objective for the stock in the next year is $306.10.

The Tesla shares split a few years ago, so keep that in mind. In August of 2020, Tesla shares were split five ways for the price of one. With Tesla’s continued market dominance, this marks the company’s second stock split in only two years.

Other Major Stock Splits

In 2022, there were a couple other significant stock splits. This year has seen a number of stock splits, Tesla included.

  • Shopify (SHOP)

In 2022, not only did Amazon, but another major online retailer, undergo a stock split. On June 29th, Shopify performed a 10-for-1 stock split. Experts are concerned about the effects of inflation and shifts in consumer spending on online retail platforms like Shopify, which profited from increased online consumer purchasing during the pandemic.

If you’re interested in seeing how stock splits affect firms’ share prices, you can do so by studying the companies’ stock charts before and after the split.

Even though these large-cap stock splits in 2022 were crucial, we still need to monitor market reaction to see if there is optimism about easing inflationary pressures. There are also external and political variables that could affect the stock market in 2022, such as new government regulations and worldwide conflicts.

  • Amazon (AMZN)

There were others who thought this stock split was the most significant of the year. At the closing of trading on June 2, Amazon’s stock split 20-to-1. For the first time since 2017, a share of Amazon has sold for less than $1,000 as a result of this stock split.

  • Alphabet (GOOG)

On July 15, 2022, after the market closed, shares of Alphabet (Google’s parent company) were split 20 for 1.

Currently, Alphabet controls 80% of the worldwide search engine industry thanks to Google’s dominance, and the advertising division of YouTube generates billions of dollars annually for the conglomerate.

Conclusion

While it’s great to keep tabs on stock splits, investors shouldn’t lose sight of the basics or get carried away by the buzz around announcements. Investors’ initial reactions to stock splits are usually quite dramatic, but in the long run, investors need to focus on the company’s actual performance. You should put your money into organizations that are successful and offer high returns for your money.
