Elon Musk Claims X Was Hit By DDoS Attack During Trump Interview, Raises Questions About Technical Issues?

Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, recently announced that the site was targeted by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack just as he was about to interview presidential hopeful Donald Trump. “We’re facing a significant DDoS attack on X and are working to mitigate it,” Musk stated on August 12th. Such attacks involve flooding a network or service with overwhelming traffic, preventing legitimate users from accessing it. This incident caused technical difficulties for the scheduled X Spaces event between Musk and Trump, which was set to begin at 8:00 pm Eastern Time. Many users reported being unable to join, with the site indicating that the stream was “not available.” Remarkably, around 120,000 people still managed to tune in. Musk later clarified in a separate post that X had conducted a system test earlier that day, successfully handling eight million concurrent listeners. Despite the attack, the platform’s resilience was demonstrated, albeit with some access issues for users trying to join the live interview.

Musk managed to start the interview shortly after 8:30 pm ET, promising unedited audio to be posted “immediately thereafter.” The interview, which he earlier announced would “proceed with a smaller number of live listeners,” began with Musk noting, “As this massive attack illustrates, there’s a lot of opposition to people just hearing what President Trump has to say.” Over the course of the two-hour conversation, Trump discussed various topics including the attempt on his life, illegal immigration, and foreign relations. He also criticized President Joe Biden and his current rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. Surprisingly, despite Trump’s known pro-crypto stance and Musk’s longstanding affection for Dogecoin, the topic of cryptocurrency was not mentioned during the interview. Instead, the focus remained on Trump’s views and opinions on a range of political and personal issues, providing listeners with an unfiltered perspective from the former president. The interview offered a rare, uncensored platform for Trump to voice his opinions, highlighting the significance of free speech and open dialogue in today’s political climate.

Elon Musk Claims DDoS Attack Hit X During Trump Interview Amidst Technical Issues. As the interview between Musk and Trump kicked off, Polymarket bettors placed over $1 million on a 56% likelihood of Trump mentioning “crypto” or “Bitcoin.” However, these odds quickly plummeted and continued to decline throughout the interview, eventually reaching a mere 1% by its conclusion. Prior to the interview, Thierry Breton, the European Union’s Internal Market Commissioner, cautioned Musk in a letter, emphasizing the need to adhere to EU laws. Breton expressed concerns that Musk’s interview with Trump might “amplify potentially harmful content.” In response, X CEO Linda Yaccarino described Breton’s letter as “an unprecedented attempt to extend a European law to political activities in the US,” arguing that it “patronizes European citizens” and implies they can’t “listen to a conversation and form their own opinions.” Meanwhile, technical difficulties arose during the interview, with Musk claiming that X was hit by a DDoS attack.
