What is DHT (Dihydrotestosterone)?

DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a hormone that plays a key role in the sexual development of people assigned male at birth (AMAB). More specifically, DHT is an androgen — a hormone that stimulates the development of male characteristics.

What is DHT derived from?

DHT is derived from testosterone. Testosterone is a hormone that’s present in both men and women. It and DHT are androgens, or hormones that contribute to male sex characteristics when you go through puberty. These traits include: growth of the penis, scrotum, and testicles as sperm production begins

What is the role of DHT in fetal development?

During fetal development, DHT plays a vital role in the development of the penis and prostate gland. In men, the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase (5-AR) converts testosterone into DHT in the testes and the prostate. Up to 10 percent of testosterone is normally converted into DHT. DHT is more powerful than testosterone.

Can DHT be used as a medication?

In addition to its role as a natural hormone, DHT has been used as a medication, for instance in the treatment of low testosterone levels in men; for information on DHT as a medication, see the androstanolone article.
