What is the meaning of BFIC?

Benign familial infantile convulsions, also known as BFIC, is a distinct type of epilepsy syndrome that has garnered attention in recent times.

However, despite its benign nature, BFIC can still cause significant distress and concern for parents and caregivers due to the sudden and unpredictable nature of seizures.

Diagnosis of BFIC is based on a comprehensive evaluation that includes a detailed history, physical examination, and various diagnostic tests such as electroencephalography (EEG) to confirm the presence of seizures.

Characterized by a specific age of onset, BFIC typically manifests in infants between the ages of 3 and 12 months.

Among the various treatment options available, the majority of children with BFIC do not require pharmacological intervention as seizures tend to resolve spontaneously. However, for those who do require treatment, anti-seizure medications can be prescribed.
