Why do pre-1982 pennies weigh more?

I have some pennies that were minted before 1982, and I noticed that they seem to weigh more than the pennies minted after that year. I'm curious to know why there's a difference in weight. Could it be due to a change in the composition of the coin, or some other reason? Why do pre-1982 pennies weigh more?
