What is an S&P 500 ETF?

An S&P 500 ETF is simply a fund that aims to duplicate the performance of the S&P 500 Index, or one of its various sub-indexes (like the S&P 500 Growth Index tracked by IVW). The S&P 500 is market capitalization weighted, which means that the sway given to each company’s performance is based on the total market value of its outstanding shares.

IVW implements a different investment strategy than the other ETFs listed above. Rather than tracking the performance of the S&P 500, the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF focuses on the S&P 500 Growth Index—a sub-index that tracks the approximate half of the S&P 500 that’s primed for growth.
